Chris and I have grown accustomed to driving south for the holidays each year. We look forward to the trip and enjoy time with my family. After arriving on Monday, Mom and I went shopping to run the usual "last-minute errands" and I bought my first pair of maternity jeans, which I can not quite hold up at the moment. It was quite the adventure, having tried on about 11 pair--either too long, too short, too wide, too slim; finally I found a pair that worked. Yesterday, as tradition calls, we spent most of the day in the kitchen baking christmas cookies and today, Christmas Eve, we'll eat early and attend Olive's Candlelight Service at 6pm, so we can enjoy Jesus' birthday cake (Red Velvet) when we get home. This year is extra special to have my Memaw with us. After losing her husband of 60 years in May, my DeDaddy, she is doing her best to make friends and involve herself in activities each day at her new apt. complex. Memaw, I am so proud of you! We're also pleased to have David with us. Most of you know that he's now living in Denver, CO and we have not seen him since early June. Welcome home, David.
This Christmas I am making a conscious effort to remember why Christmas exists. Even though I know it's Jesus' birthday and without Christ and his death we would all be doomed, I am still caught up in the glitz and glam of lights, presents, and pretty colors and often find myself stressed to run one more errand. This year, though it's a small example, I remembered something I forgot for Chris' stocking and decided he could do without it; I was not getting in the car again and making one more purchase. That small moment was liberating! As we all celebrate the joy of christmas, let's effort ourselves to remember that perfection to get it all done and done "right" doesn't exist and when we remember the significance of Christ's birth, the glamour of Christmas becomes small and simple, yet much more meaningful. Love to all and Merriest of Christmases to you!
