LOVED the new pediatrician! LOVED him! Everyone said I would and I did! There is a reason he has almost a 2 month waiting list to see him---because HE'S AWESOME! (Can you tell I was pleased?) Brayden, who has never met a stranger, warmed to him immediately, grabbing his nose, playing with his "flashlight", and babbling away while I tried to explain our background information. Without taking you through the whole appointment, step-by-step, the bottom line is that Brayden is normal and at this time, he does NOT see a reason to pursue physical therapy, and certainly does NOT see the need for a neurological exam. YAY!!! He asked several good questions, the first of which was "Do big heads run in the family?" This has been mentioned to the doctor before, but I've never quite felt validated in my information offering. He then did a basic physical exam, checking for muscle tone, particularly in his lower body. "My gosh! This kid's got rocks in here, Mom!" was his comment when he checked his thighs. I smiled. "Oh, I know. That's from kicking in his bed before he falls asleep." He was impressed with how sociable and personable Brayden was for his age and said that typically when there is gross motor delay, there are warning signs in other areas, such as social skills, fine motor skills, etc.. This coupled with his excellent muscle tone helped rule out the need to pursue specialized care. He basically said that Brayden will walk when he wants to and we can do things to encourage him to use his feet, but he will do it when he's ready! I can't tell you how I appreciate his common sense approach. He has practiced for 21 years, has 6 children of his own and was warm, gentle, laid back, and clearly loves kids! I am thanking God for not only a positive report, but a great new doctor!
